Life at Death Valley
Feb. 3rd, 2025 10:05 pmGetting here was much more stressful than it needed to be. I took a bus from Denver to Las Vegas, then spent a few hours in a hostel, then took a Lyft to the airport to wait for the shuttle. I'm always early for everything anyway, but the Onboarding Coordinator had emailed me to say that if I missed the shuttle I would be responsible for getting to Death Valley on my own, which I absolutely could not afford, so I arrived at the airport before 9:00. The shuttle was supposed to pick us up at 9:30, but as that time approached I did not see anyone holding a sign that said "The Oasis at Death Valley." People were holding signs that said other things, so I felt fairly certain I was in the right spot, but of course my anxiety was through the roof. I tried calling the Onboarding Coordinator, but got no answer. I met a few other new employees who were also worried about the shuttle that hadn't shown up yet. It finally arrived around 10:00, and it turned out that the Onboarding Coordinator WAS the driver. She did not apologize for being late.
Anyway, living here is . . . fine. It's not nearly as nice as CMR, but rent is exponentially cheaper, and there is much more free food, and obviously the whole situation is significantly better than being homeless.
But I am sort of somewhat impatient to live through the next few months and leave here with several thousand dollars. Which isn't much in the grand scheme of things, but it will be more money than I've ever had in my life.
Speaking of money! I am very very very impatient for Wednesday, which will be myfirst second payday. (Well, my actual first payday was tiny because my first day of orientation just happened to take place on the last day of that pay period, so I received a check for seven hours.) I'm not sure exactly how many hours I have worked so far, but probably sixty or seventy, so it should be a nice little pile of money. Like eight or nine hundred dollars, which is more money than I've made at once in who knows how long. Actually, I do know how long: since we left CMR.
So, yeah! Even though it is my Monday, Wednesday cannot come soon enough!
Unfortunately I won't be able to save all of my earnings. I will have to pay for . . .
I should be able to save almost all of my next check, though, so that's good. Money money money. Hate it, need it, gotta have it.

- half of my phone bill on Saturday, 2/15
- YELLOWJACKETS SEASON THREE!!! I think the only way to watch is to get Paramount Plus With Showtime, which is a little disappointing, as I would prefer to buy a season pass on Prime Video, but whatever, I must watch this show as soon as new episodes become available, I am so very goddamn fucking excited!
- reimburse my roommate for the work shirt he bought me
- a second work shirt, maybe even a third
- some more hangers
- WIRELESS EARBUDS - I lost the case for mine in December, and without the case there's no way to charge them, so I've been stuck with my back-up wired ones. Which work fine, but they tend to fall out of my ears all the time, and when they are plugged in the phone I can't charge it, and they can't connect to my laptop
- a box fan? Or maybe an oscillating tower fan? Obviously my room does have AC, which is conveniently located right next to my bed, but it doesn't actually blow cool air in my direction, so I need a fan that will
- energy drinks? saltines? cashews?
- hand soap refill
- might as well order more toilet paper sooner than later
- if I can take the weekly shuttle into Pahrump, I really want to get a buzz cut so I don't have to worry about my hair. Plus, it will be so much cooler
I should be able to save almost all of my next check, though, so that's good. Money money money. Hate it, need it, gotta have it.
