This is something I originally posted in a private entry on the 26th of last month. My SDCC excitement made me think it would be fun to reread and update it and share it with the Internet.

  • First of all, I just want to say that this show is intriguing because *crosses hooves* it might actually be GENUINELY GREAT. I mean, the original Charmed was and is obviously one of my most watched shows ever, but a lot of that truly is hate-watching. It has a brilliant concept, of course --- who wouldn't want to watch a show about three sisters who happen to be the most powerful witches in the history of time? --- but rarely, if ever, lives up to its potential.
  •
  • Why am I so hopeful for the new show? Well, duh, it's simple: I am BEYOND EXCITED that, in 2018, none of the Charmed Ones will be white, one of them will be biracial, and one will be gay. No, seriously, shut up, this is huge. And the show runner is the creator of Jane the Virgin? And most of the other writers are also women? THIS SHOW MIGHT ACTUALLY BE GENUINELY GREAT.
  •
  • I love that Our Heroes are Latinx, and one of them is half black, and one of them is gay. Trump would hate this show.
  •
  • This time, their names are Macy, Mel, and Maggie. Macy is a mash-up of Not Prue and Not Paige (telekinetic; oldest sister like Prue; half-sister who grew up without knowing the other two like Paige; ????), Mel is Not Piper, and Maggie is Not Phoebe. I have no particular feelings about the name Macy, which just makes me think of the store, but Mel is interesting because it could possibly be short for Melinda (!!!!), and Maggie is one of my favorite names ever. I actually have a character named Maggie in the Magical Girl series I haven't been writing for the last four years. Their mom's name is Marisol, which is hexcellent. All in all I am quite thrilled to meet this family.
  • NOTE FROM THE FUTURE: Mel's name almost definitely is significant. The pilot contains some sort of reference to Melinda Warren. Which is fun and all, but my level of excitement for references to Old Charmed is **nowhere**fucking**near** my level of excitement to meet the all-new all-different Charmed Ones of 2018. So this spoiler (which, again, is something everybody guessed as soon as we saw their names) is less of a big deal for me than it could be for other people.
  • Pretty much by default, Mel is my obvious favorite. She's Not Piper, AND she's gay? Hellur. As a bonus, I love how Not Piper will not be in love with Not Leo. Speaking of . . .
  •
  • Here is something I want more than words can say: I hope Not Leo turns out to be evil (he could even be the one who killed Marisol!), so the sisters destroy him with an epic spell, and then spend the rest of the series teaching each other about magic WITHOUT having a straight white man explain it to them in every episode.
  •
  • But for real, why does every story about magic have to have a British guy named Harry? There are other names out there, guys.
  •
  • They've already mixed up the sisters' powers a little bit. Maggie can hear thoughts, which seems to be triggered when she touches someone, at least for the first time. This is thrilling, and I hope they mix it up even more as the show goes on (and on and on, for NINE seasons). For example, at some point Maggie should start having premonitions. If only one sister is allowed to "have" the power of astral projection, it should be her. She should be the best at scrying (which, by the way, witches can do more than one way, not just this dangle-a-crystal-over-a-map-to-get-a-general-idea-of-somoeone's-location business; she could, for example, gaze into a cup of coffee and spy on anyone anywhere) and get the most dream messages from dead people and have the strongest "spirit magnet" of the three. Basically, she's your witch for anything psychic. She could learn to levitate at some point, but so could both of her sisters, because THEY ARE WITCHES, guys.
  •
  • Mel can stop time. My hope is that they really do keep it that simple, no sciencifying about how oh by the way your powers actually work by affecting ~molecules~ or anything (if anyone's powers should go to a molecular level, it's Macy, the scientist who develops fucking telekinesis). She should still learn how to blow shit up at some point, because that's just a fun power for the angriest sister to have, but this time they could explain it as blah blah accelerated entropy blah blah, I don't really care, as long as it's vaguely related to time. Other powers could include superspeed, time travel, and shrugging off mortal injuries because she moves the wound through time. For example.
  •
  • And then, as I have already mentioned more than once, Macy is telekinetic. I kiiiind of hope she occasionally channels it by telling stuff where to move, like Paige, but won't exactly be devastated if this never happens. ZERO of Prue's "astral projection" bullshit. (I want Maggie to get it because I'm fairly confident these writers will actually understand what it is.) She will need to learn how to teleport at some point. Other powers? She could learn healing, invisibility, intangibility, I don't even know. TK is pretty versatile, especially when paired with teleportation and, you know, magic.
  • Today, SDCC day, it happened to occur to me that, as a scientist, there's a good chance Macy is a total fucking nerd. There's a good chance Macy is a total fucking nerd who was obsessed with Harry Potter in middle school, and never really grew out of it. If she does channel her powers by talking, she could SAY HARRY POTTER SPELLS. She could do Expelliarmus, Accio, Lumos, Nox, Alohomora, Wingardium Leviosa, Crucio, Avada Kedavra,* and I don't even know what else. Except, here is one more: After she gets the hang of teleportation, she could whisper "Apparate!" while she does it, and/or not-jokingly talk about turning Maggie's lipstick into a Portkey . . .
  • I love pretty much everything about the trailer, but the one moment that gives me the most chills every single time is: the three of them hold hands -> window explodes. The way it cuts from their hands to the window makes me think they might not actually be the same scene (never trust a trailer), but I don't even care, because you know that's the sort of thing that's going to happen kind of a lot on this show.

*That's two of the three Unforgivable Curses. The other one, Imperio, would be covered under Maggie's power set. At least, I'm guessing.
